pfSense is a free and open-source network firewall distribution. You can install pfSense on an old PC, Mini PC or even run pfSense as a virtual machine. There are many great ready-to-use hardware firewalls on the market. However, in this article, we will solely focus on the best pfSense hardware.
The official pfSense hardware is developed by Netgate. You’ll see some of them in this list too. However, if you want to use the free and open-source pfSense software (pfSense CE), then you need to install it on third-party hardware.
If you are new to pfSense, then I recommend taking the “pfSense Fundamentals – Secure Your Network With pfSense” course to learn about its features and make the most out of your pfSense box.
Update (Jan 2023): Added Protectli Vault FW4C.
Here’s the summary of the best pfSense Hardware:

Buying Guide for pfSense mini PCs
If you’re planning to buy a mini pc for pfSense rather than the official Netgate appliances, then this guide is for you.
At the beginning of this article, I have already mentioned the pfSense Hardware Requirements. Here, I am going to mention some additional things that will help you choose the right mini PC for pfSense.
Network Interface Card (NIC)
The NIC is the most important factor when deciding on a mini PC for pfSense. It is always recommended to go with the Intel NIC for optimum performance.
All the Mini PCs mentioned in this list have Intel NIC.
AES-NI Support
AES-NI (Advanced Encryption Standard New Instructions) are a set of instructions that enable fast and secure data encryption and decryption. It is natively supported by modern processors.
It can help speed up cryptography processes for SSL and VPN services. Once again, all mini pc mentioned here have AES-NI support.
Silent Design
If you are buying pfSense hardware for your home, then you might want it to make low noise during operations, especially if you’re planning to put the pfSense box in your bedroom or office.
Therefore, a mini PC with a fanless design should be the one you should go for. All the pfSense hardware mentioned in this list has a fanless design to make low to no noise while working.
Number of Ports
You’ll require at least two ports (preferably 1 WAN and 1 LAN port) on your Mini PC for pfSense. The WAN port connects to your ISP’s modem and the LAN port will be used to connect the devices in the home/office.
Conclusion
This concludes the best pfSense hardware list. I have included both the official Netgate hardware and Mini PCs that are capable to run pfSense without any hassle.
If you are not afraid to get your hands dirty, then Mini PCs will prove the best and most affordable way to get the benefits of this awesome firewall solution.
Another great open-source firewall solution is OPNsense, just like pfSense, it is also based on FreeBSD. You can use the Mini PCs mentioned here with OPNsense or you can have a look at the dedicated list I have made for the best OPNsense hardware.
